How to Become a Registered Pharmacist in U.K

General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) governing the pharmacist registration in UK, and as an Overseas pharmacist we have to fulfill these requirements.


Step 1: An Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme (OSPAP)
Step 2: 52 weeks of Pre-registration training approved by the GPhC 
Step 3: The registration assessment Examination.

Step 1: Overseas Pharmacists' Assessment Programme (OSPAP):



OSPAP is a one-year post graduate diploma course designed to ensure that those who have qualified overseas receive the appropriate education and training to prepare them for UK Practice and entry to Pre-registration training. Entry to these course needs English language proficiency of IELTS testing at level 7 in each category at a single test.

Step 2: 52 weeks of Pre-registration training approved by the GPhC:

On graduation you will be eligible to apply for preregistration training for a one-year period prior to taking up the registration examination of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Step 3: The registration assessment Exam:

There are two examination papers; an open-book and a closed book paper. Questions are based on practice-based situations and are designed to test the thinking and knowledge which lie behind any action.

How to Become a Registered Pharmacist in Australia

Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) governing the pharmacy Exam in Australia.



Step 1: Document Evaluation.
Step 2: English Competency Examination.
Step 3: KAPS (Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Exam)
Step 4: Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA) requirements for registration.

Step 1: Document Evaluation:

An initial assessment of a candidate’s qualifications and associated documents is undertaken to determine an applicant's eligibility to undertake the secondary assessment which is the knowledge assessment (KAPS) for Stream A or the competency assessment (CAOP) for Stream B.

Step 2: English Competency Examination:

An overall Band score of at least 7.5(with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components) at the Academic level of IELTS is an essential prerequisite for enrollment in the KAPS (as used in Stream A).

Step 3: Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences (KAPS)

The KAPS consists of two papers of multiple choice questions covering pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology and physiology, and therapeutics. It is held in Australia and overseas in March and September each year.

Step 4: Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA) registration requirements

1-Supervised practice in an Australian pharmacy under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist (1824 hours)

2-An intern training program.
-attendance at seminars and workshops
-completion of assessment tasks

3-A written examination.

4-A oral examination.

How to Become a Registered Pharmacist in USA

National Association Board of Pharmacy (NABP) is conducting pharmacy Exam in USA. Refer: http://www.nabp.net/


There are 3 steps to achieve NABP pharmacist certification for International students.

Step 1: Document Evaluation by ECE
Step 2: The Pharmacist Equivalence examination certification by FPGEC
Step 3: The NAPLEX Examination

Step 1: Document Evaluation by ECE:

Evaluation Credential evaluation (ECE) is a separate non profit organization, evaluating you educational document equivalence with USA degree. Refer: http://www.ece.org/

We easily qualify that by sending our PharmD degree and transcript according to their requirements.

Step 2: The Pharmacist Equivalence examination certification by FPGEC:

FPGEC is Foreign Pharmacist Graduate Equivalence Examination Certificate required by International students by fulfilling two requirements.

1-FPGEE (Foreign Pharmacist Graduate Equivalence Exam) :

2-TOEFL iBT (Computerized Based) requirement :
Reading: 21
Listening: 18
Speaking: 26
Writing: 24. 

Step 3: The NAPLEX Examination :

You must get FPGEC to qualify for the NAPLEX exam. NAPLEX is a nationwide exam used by boards of pharmacy as one component of pharmacist licensure.

How to Become a Registered Pharmacist in Canada

There are 3 steps for an International student to achieve PEBC pharmacist certification:

Step 1: Document Evaluation.
Step 2: The Pharmacist Evaluating Examination.
Step 3: The Pharmacist Qualifying Examination, Part I (MCQ) and Part II (OSCE).

Step 1: Document Evaluation:

You must pass this evaluation of your educational and professional credentials to be eligible to write the Pharmacist Evaluating Examination (We easily qualify that).

You must pass this written examination to be eligible for the Pharmacist Qualifying Examination –Parts I and II (You have to go through all pharmacy course once to pass this exam).

Step 2: The Pharmacist Evaluating Examination:

You must pass this written examination to be eligible for the Pharmacist Qualifying Examination –Parts I and II (You have to go through all pharmacy course once to pass this exam).

Step 3: The Pharmacist Qualifying Examination, Part I (MCQ) (Written) and Part II (OSCE) (Verbal).

Your final step to qualifying for certification with PEBC. When you have passed both Parts of the examination you will be certified and registered with PEBC as Qualified Pharmacist.

For this portion you have to really work hard and proper understanding of Drug and therapeutics.

Need 1000 hour of internship and IELTS 6.5 to get register with PEBC. Then after that job is not a issue, Drug store will be chasing you for Job.

Overseas Doctoral Fellowship to Indian Students

Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has recently approved the launch of SERB Overseas Doctoral Fellowship. 
  • Under this programme SERB provides fellowship to Indian students graduating from Indian universities/ institutes to pursue Ph.D. in areas of science, technology, engineering and medicine in academic institutions of international repute abroad.
  • The Programme aims to build national capacity where the talent supply of researchers in areas of interest to the country is sub-critical.
  • The applicant should be an Indian and have completed eligible degree in India (Bachelor/Post graduate) in Science or Engineering (including Medicine, Pharma, Agriculture and related S&T areas) not earlier than preceding two years.
  • The applicant should have got admission into doctoral research program in *specified areas in overseas top ranking universities. The fellowship amount will be US $24,000 per annum.
  • The fellowship will be offered for a period of 4 years. In exceptional cases, the fellowship can be extended for one more year.
  • In addition, one time Contingency/Preparatory allowance of Rs. 60,000/- and return Airfare (Economy) will be given to every fellow.
  • SERB is in a process of initiating dialogue with top ranking overseas Universities to explore long term partnerships to build quality human capacity. 
SERB has entered Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the following Universities:


SERB has been negotiating with more top ranking Universities. Students who secured admission in other top ranking Universities across the globe can also apply for these fellowships. They should send the applications directly to SERB along with a copy of admission offer letter from the overseas institution and their bio-data. In this case, selected fellows will be provided a fellowship of US $24,000 per annum and one time Contingency/Preparatory allowance of Rs. 60,000/- and return Airfare (Economy). The selected candidate is required to execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.100/- before a notary-public/Oath of Commissioner as per specimen bond of SERB. The candidates are required to return to India after completion of their Ph.D. However, permission for staying for another four years after completion of the Ph.D course may be considered, for the reasons to be recorded in writing without any financial support of any kind whatsoever from SERB.

Pharmacy Scholarships - 2016

Scholarship Provider: University of Laval, Canada
Eligible Students: To be eligible, you graduated from a public university accredited by the ministry of higher education in your country of origin. For private institutions, eligibility is determined when the file is reviewed.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing master’s programme at the University of Laval.
Award Details: This scholarship of $7,000 per year is renewable once, subject to compliance with the faculty’s criteria of excellence and upon the research director’s recommendation and faculty approval.
Application Deadline: January 15th, 2016 and March 15th, 2016


Scholarship Provider: University of Sydney, Australia
Eligible Students: Commencing students in the Faculty of Pharmacy who demonstrate academic ability, as well as one or more of the following disadvantages: financial, long-term medical, regional/remote, Indigenous Australian, sole parent responsibilities.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate programme.
Award Details: This scholarship includes $6,000 per year for four year.
Application Deadline: 5 January 2016


Scholarship Provider: University of Brighton, UK
Eligible Students: Students become eligible to apply once they have enrolled on year one of their course.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing master’s programme.
Award Details: This scholarship includes £2,000 for international students studying certain MSc and MRes programmes within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences.

Scholarship Provider: Monash University, Australia
Eligible Students: Commencing undergraduate student in either the Bachelor of Pharmacy or the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science at a Monash Campus in Australia.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing Undergraduate programme.
Award Details: The scholarship includes 50% of tuition fees paid per year until the minimum credit points for your degree are completed (two highest-achieving students).
Application Deadline: Applications will be open soon for 2016 round.


Scholarship Provider: University of Newcastle, Australia
Eligible Students: The applicant must be a commencing student in a Bachelor undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Health and Medicine, School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, at the Callaghan campus.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate programme.
Award Details: The scholarship includes $10000 amount.
Application Deadline: Applications are not submitted for this scholarship – this will be awarded based on internal assessment following Semester 1 census date.


Scholarship Provider: Robert Gordon University, UK
Eligible Students: Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in pharmacy from a UK university or overseas equivalent, at a minimum of honours level and one year post-registration experience or an integrated masters degree in pharmacy (MPharm) and professional registration or in consultation with the course leader.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate degree programme.
Award Details: Amount available for the scholarship is £1000 per award.
Application Deadline: 28 January 2016


Scholarship Provider: University of East Anglia, UK
Eligible Students: These scholarships will help the brightest students, no matter what their background or financial circumstances, with tuition fees for one of the Centre’s academic preparation programmes.-INTO University of East Anglia offers a range of courses proven to help international students progress to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the UK.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing International Foundation program at University of East Anglia.
Award Details: 100% scholarships (worth up to £16,795) are awarded for students.
Application Deadline: 2 November 2015


Scholarship Provider: Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran
Eligible Students: To be eligible, the candidate may not possess dual citizenship, where the second citizenship is from Iran.
Course: Scholarships are available for undertaking undergraduate programs.
Award Details: Scholarship covers all your expenses except for the tuition fee, including registration, furnished accommodation, insurance, Persian language courses, and English language courses. Scholarship is a partial or full tuition-waiver scholarship, which covers fees of registration, furnished accommodation, insurance, Persian language courses, English language courses and discount on the tuition fee ranging from 1% to 100%.
Application Deadline: There is no deadline for this application. However, the university accepts students only for the fall semester.


Scholarship Provider: University of Sydney, Australia
Eligible Students: The scholarships are open to students currently enrolled full-time at an Australian University in an undergraduate degree or professional doctorate; including students enrolled in an MD program at the University of Sydney or other Australian University.
Course: Scholarships are available for students to obtain experience in medical-related research and provide a fantastic insight into the research process.
Award Details: The scholarship includes $300 per week stipend.
Application Deadline: 17 September 2015


Scholarship Provider: University Grant Commission (Government of India)
Eligible Students: The candidate must have obtained Graduate degree in the relevant subject and obtained admission at Postgraduate level for regular full time course in any of the Professional subject in a recognized University/Institution/College.
Course: Scholarships are available to pursue postgraduate studies in recognized Indian Universities/Institutions/ Colleges.
Award Details: The financial assistance available under the scheme is as follows: Scholarship: @Rs.7,800/- per month (ME/M.Tech); @Rs.4,700/- per month for other courses; Contingency A: @Rs.15, 000/- per annum (ME/M.Tech); @Rs.10,000/- per annum for other courses.
Application Deadline: 30 August 2015


Scholarship Provider: Cardiff University, UK
Eligible Students: The candidate must have Residency and Academic criteria. Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students without further restrictions. Academic criteria: The projects would suit graduates (BSc/MSc) in a biomedical-related discipline including Pharmacy (MPharm).
Course: Studentship is available for pursuing PhD degree level at Cardiff University in UK.
Award Details: It consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend of £14, 260 p. a.
Application Deadline: 2 August 2015


Scholarship Provider: EPSRC The Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Imaging, UK
Eligible Students: Candidates must have a good command of English and be able to apply this in an academic environment.
Course: Studentships are available for doctoral research projects.
Award Details: This includes tuition fees, stipend and bench fee. Stipend: Students will receive a tax free stipend of ca. £16,000 per year. Bench fees: A generous allowance will be provided for research consumables and for attending UK and international conferences.
Application Deadline: 1st March 2015


Scholarship Provider: King’s College London, UK
Eligible Students: All Home/EU applicants applying to the Analytical Science for Industry MScprogramme that have obtained or are expected to obtain the minimum academic entry requirements – Minimum 2:1 first degree in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy or a related discipline.
Course: Bursaries are available for pursuing MSc degree at King’s College London.
Award Details: Two major pharmaceutical company bursaries of £3,500 towards Home/EU Fees are available.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2015


Scholarship Provider: The Australian Government Department of Health
Eligible Students: The student must have lived in a defined rural area (PhARIA areas 2-6) for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years from the age of five. The student must also be a member of the student Rural Health Club or a member of their university’s affiliated Rural Health Club. Proof of membership is required prior to receiving scholarship payments.
Course: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree at an Australian university.
Award Details: There are at least 30 Rural Pharmacy scholarships offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student, meaning a student may be granted $40,000 over a four-year period. A total of 3 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum for a maximum of four years are offered annually. Study at honours level beyond the length of an undergraduate course is not covered by the scholarship.

Scholarship Provider: NCPA Foundation
Eligible Students: All pharmacy students who are NCPA student members are eligible to apply for ONE of the NCPA Foundation Scholarships per academic year. The student must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. school or college of pharmacy on a full-time basis during the term that the scholarship is awarded. Note: Students may only receive this award one time.
Course:
Award Details: The award recipient must be present at the NCPA Annual Convention to receive this award. Up to a $300 travel stipend will be provided along with a complimentary registration to the NCPA conference.

Message to Indian Pharmacists: Opportunities in the Global Market

I'm very much thankful to His excellency Lt. Colonel PRASAD R TIRUNAGARU M. Pharm., MSC, R.PH for sharing this valuable information with us.

Lt. Colonel Prasad received his B.Pharm and M.Pharm degrees from Andhra University and Medical Service Core training as a combat pharmacist at the Academy of Health Sciences of US Army Medical department centre, Texas, USA. He was the first South Indian to be commissioned as an officer in the US Army. He was the first foreigner to pass the prestigious California State Board Exams in the world.

He has thirty five years of experience as a registered pharmacist in USA, as Assistant Chief and Chief of Pharmacy in various army medical centres. Specialties include clinical research in developing human genetic insulin, nutritional studies, in-patient and outpatient pharmacies, oncology, chemotherapy and nuclear pharmacies. Developed hospital formulary, clinical training modules for healthcare professionals.


Message to Indian Pharmacists: 


US Job Market: There is always great demand for registered pharmacists in USA, the pharmacists are highly respected, most trusted and well paid professionals. The average salary is $120,000 to $200,000 per year. 

Retail and Community Pharmacist: It provides majority of the pharmacist jobs in USA. The major function of the pharmacists is filling and dispensing medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders, detecting therapeutic incompatibilities. They counsel the patients regarding drug usage, side effects and precautions, they also administer vaccines and drug information. They help physicians and healthcare professionals regarding proper usage, selection of medications and therapeutic guidelines. 

Hospital Pharmacist: Pharmacists play a very important role as a healthcare team member in the hospital providing high quality comprehensive pharmaceutical care. Specialties include outpatient pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, oncology/IV Admixture. They dispense all required medication to the wards for patient administration. They provide clinical drug data, therapeutic information to all medical team members, monitor drug reactions and patient profiles. They help patients with drug counselling to optimize therapy. 

Clinical Pharmacist: Clinical pharmacists play a vital role in the applied therapeutics; they require 1-2 years of specialized programmes and training in various specialties, i.e., ambulatory care, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, geriatrics. They are well paid. They are part of every medical and therapeutic team in the hospital. Recently, State Provider Statues Bill became law in many US states. The Legislation provides that “A pharmacist may perform any patient care service delegated to the pharmacist by a physician”.


Industrial Pharmacist:This is a very promising field, specialties include drug discovery, drug development, manufacturing, clinical trials and marketing. Now, there is an exciting new world bioinformatics, genome therapy, stem cell research and promising nano-technology. 

Regulatory Authorities: US Food and Drug Administration and State Boards of Pharmacies have special and important jobs. FDA has several mission-critical medical and science positions at biological evaluations, drug evaluation and research, food safety, applied nutrition, toxicological research and drug inspectors, drug regulatory authorities at various state boards.

Immigration to USA: The important step is getting an immigrant visa to enter into USA. The choices are go for higher education or PhD in various universities. The other one is getting a dependent visa.

State Board Exams: All foreign graduates must obtain certification by the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) before they can get an intern pharmacist licence. They must pass Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Exam. In order to practice as a registered pharmacist, you have to pass the North American Pharmacists Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). Rules vary from state to state, please check individual state websites.

Tips for Passing Board Exams

Pharmacy Law: It is a very important part of the State Board Exam. Laws are very strict and precise; each state has its own state board of pharmacy laws. 

Pharmacy Mathematics: Our students can easily get 100% , mostly drug dosing conversions, drug percentage calculations and drug formulations etc. 

Drug Identifications: They must be able to identify important medications by color, shape, markings on tablets. PDR has all the information. 

Trade and Generic Names: They need to learn generic and trade names for the top 200 drugs and more. 

Drug Interactions: It is very important to know pharmacological actions of various important drugs, their medicinal chemistry, actions on target organs, drug metabolism, excretion and side effects. 

Drug and Food Interactions: They have to know food and drug interactions of all critical drugs. 

Clinical Pharmacy: It is a very critical part of patient case studies, patient profiles and interpretation of clinical laboratory tests and adverse drug reactions.
